My 2012

As Christmas Day comes to slow and tummy's are full, my family is either sleeping or watching TV and I have a relaxed urge to write.  Aside from the excitement that comes with small children, the anticipation of Santa Clause and the urgent unwrapping of presents, this year has been a relatively quiet one for us, yet a special one. For the first time in three years I have spent Christmas day with my sister.  With family mostly on the other side of the world having her here is wonderful and much missed. Time with family is something you forfeit in the quest for a life in a 'better' place. A place I want my children to grow up.

2012 has been an exciting year for me. From the very first Find Your Summer Body - 8 Week Challenge which came to a close just over a year ago, to the three challenges that followed and the growth in numbers of mums who have come to be part of the Body Beyond Baby family. To our Tough Mums who have participated in two challenges to date and are set for more to come.  I am no longer doing this thing solo which is both very exciting and scary too. Many of you know Amy, a driving force and who has been with us now for a whole year. Nicole joined our team a few months ago to really look after every new mum who begins her Body Beyond Baby journey with us.  And there are more - Jade and Olivia who helped to make your Christmas celebrations a huge success.  Ruth who is on board to nurture our 'Meals that Matter' initiative and many more that play their own special role behind the scenes. We have BBB mums currently undergoing their own transformations from mum to mum AND trainer and a select few will join our team as partners in 2013 to watch this baby grow.

I am undergoing my own transformation within a new circle of advisers and friends through a program called 'Key Person of Influence'. There is only so long that you can go doing it alone and only so long that you can figure it out for yourself. My search for the next step led me to some of the most awesome people I have ever met. Both from the people leading the way, to my peers who are traveling this journey with me. To be in a room with some of the most motivated, talented and driven people I have ever met is in itself hugely inspiring.  We are all ready to sprint into 2013 and I can't wait to create and uncover what the future holds for all of us.

A huge thank you to every single person, colleague, partner and business that I have travelled through 2012 with. You are the people that make me and Body Beyond Baby what it is today. You ignite a personal challenge within me to do it all better, to rise further and to lead by example. Thank you for everything you bring to me on both a personal and professional level.

To my 'mum's'; I am where I am today because I am a mum. My two beautiful children led me to you and watching your transformations reminds me why I get out of bed in the morning. By leading by example we can change not only your life but that of those round you, of your precious children, your partners, family and friends. Your energy and motivation is inspiring and I am truly thankful to be surrounded by such wonderful women.

I am very lucky to be supported by a wonderful man who gives me the space to run my own race but the support to know I am not alone. 2013 is set to be a whole lot of fun and a massive challenge, both wonderful and stressful but I know I am on the right track and I can't wait to continue this journey.

Think about what you want your 2013 to be, who you want to be and how you want to get there. Begin to see the road ahead and take little steps, one step at a time, one day at a time and watch the world change around you. You have the ability to create whatever you want to create and to be whoever you want to be. Being a mum doesn't close doors, it opens them and gives you the ability to shape not only your world but that of the little people in your life. Make yourself proud, make them proud and create your own version of a wonderful life - whatever that may mean to you. Merry Christmas x

Find Your Summer Body - Before and After photos and Q&A with our winner Charlotte

Today we chat with Charlotte - winner of our latest Find Your Summer Body - 8 Week Challenge

What initially made you sign up to the 8 Week Challenge?

I was inspired by two other mums who had already completed a challenge and had great results, they were looking fantastic. I was really keen to lose weight and feel better about myself, but I knew that I was going to need help staying focused and most importantly I would need care for my little guy/s so I could participate in group exercise.

What were your initial goals and did you think you would reach them?

I didn’t have any specific goals at the start until I was instructed to engage in some goal setting tasks. At the initial weigh-in I was thinking 10kg would be a nice amount to loose but wasn’t too sure if that was achievable. I was hesitant to ask Jen if 10kg in 8 weeks was realistic, I thought perhaps I was kidding myself and I might sound a bit silly for asking. I really did struggle with putting out there the amount of weight I wanted to try and loose and I was too afraid to upload and share my goals with the other Mums in the challenge, possibly for fear of failing.

However, I did ask Jen that day if 10kg was a realistic goal and achievable and her response was stern but effective and words that stuck in my head throughout the challenge, “you’ll only get out of this what you put in, it’s up to you”. And with that I set my goal as 10kg weight loss, even though I wasn’t 100% positive I could do it I was going to give it a good crack.

What were the easiest and most challenging aspects?

The easiest is part for me was having someone else organise my work out and what I was going to be doing for that hour, yay! One less thing to have to think about for the day. The most challenging was changing my eating habits. Not so much avoiding what I shouldn’t eat but organising myself so that I had the right foods to eat and not skipping meals.

What were your favorite and least favorite bits?

My favourite part of the challenge was seeing my fitness improve my least favourite part was the first Sunday steps and watching myself be lapped … twice!

How many sessions per week did you exercise to achieve your goals?

Initially I did two mid-week sessions, the Saturday morning sessions and Sunday stairs. After the first 4 weeks I really felt my fitness levels improve and felt inspired as it had happened much faster than anticipated, so then a few more sessions were attended. After the halfway weigh –in my fitness levels had improved immensely and it gave me the motivation to exercise daily – I knew I had to step it up if I wanted to reach my goals.

Did you have to change your diet a lot?

I had already started to address some of my bad eating habits but being on the challenge had reinforced the importance of a healthy, balanced diet. I loved how much the focus was on really good food ‘real food’. I didn’t have a meal plan and had never been good at keeping food journals, however constantly being educated on the foods that I had been previously eating and the foods I should be eating meant I made so many better choices.

Do you feel like your diet and exercise changes were sustainable?

The eating part was not perfect, I was on track about 80% of the time. However, during the bad moments I was aware of it and it enabled me to learn a lot about myself, my habits and even made me realise some little emotional issues that are associated with food. It really helped me discover what is realistic for my own personal circumstances to help maintain my weight. I love eating healthy food!
In respect to regular exercise; initially I was questioning myself on whether I would have enough energy to work out as my youngest is not the best sleeper (can be up 2-3 times a night, I am  not complaining he is a pleasure to wake up to) which can leave me feeling very tiered, but by working out my energy increased and it didn’t take me long to realise that despite the night before,  I could still make the effort which overall lead to a far more productive day anyway.

What else did you gain from your challenge experience (apart from diet and exercise)?

A confidence within myself that I have not had for such long time and maybe never truly have. I have been underestimating what I am capable of and while cliché this challenge and all its experiences, has shown me that I am capable of so much more in so many aspects of my life and that it’s ok to be selfish, it’s not a bad word and it’s ok if I feel amazing and have it all.

What would your advice be to a new mum thinking about doing the challenge?

I have managed to lose weight, address many of my bad eating habits (acknowledge them), exercise 4-5+ times a week, improve my mental wellbeing and I have done that amongst moving house, running a small business and sleep deprivation. It’s a wonderful and energising environment being around so may beautiful, inspirational and kind women all in a similar position working towards a common goal. It is selfish and that’s perfectly fine.

Sum up your challenge experience for us

The first step towards a better, healthier and stronger me. Much appreciated

Find Your Summer Body - 8 Week Challenge Major Prize AND sponsor

As we gear up for our end of challenge and Christmas party tomorrow evening I am so excited to tell you more about the event and announce our major prize (which we have been working on behind the scenes to pull together our ultimate 'wish list' pamper prize!  Without our valued sponsors and partners we could not pull together these events or reward our mums with these amazing prizes.

My first and very loud shout out goes to Mad Pizza, Bondi Beach - having had our last end of challenge party at Mad Pizza the feedback was unanimous that we had to go there again.  After more conversation Jono and his team jumped on board to sponsor our whole event, pizza's, salads and cocktails for all!  Off the back of this we then saw the opportunity to continue the tradition of a ticketed event but to half the cost to give back to our mums and then give all proceeds to charity.  We have chosen to support beyondblue's beyondbabyblues initiative because supporting those who support mums with PND is close to our hearts and supporting mums is what Body Beyond Baby is all about.  So once again a MASSIVE thank you to Mad Pizza, Bondi Beach for believing in our cause, making our event into something extra special for our mums AND enabling us to give.

Next up I am super excited to announce our major prize collaboration.  One very hard working, committed and deserving mum will walk away with:

Tuna Nicoise Style Salad

The weather is getting warmer and Summer is on its way.  Bring on yummy salads!  I have left the potato out from the traditional version of a Tuna Nicoise as many of our Body Beyond Baby Mums are currently 'no sugar'.  It still tastes delicious!

Ingredients (Serves 4)

2 x 200g tuna steaks
2 x boiled eggs, quartered
400g green beans, blanched
16 cherry tomatoes, halved
12 pitted kalamata olives
¼ red onion, sliced
2 cups mixed salad leaves
1 cup continental parsley, chopped
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp red wine vinegar
1 tsp Dijon mustard

Method
•    Heat a frying pan on high heat
•    Cook tuna steaks and cook for 2-3 minutes each side
•    Let tuna rest while preparing the rest of the salad
•    Whisk olive oil, vinegar and mustard together and set aside
•    Divide salad ingredients among four plates
•    Flake the tuna over the prepared salads
•    Drizzle with the dressing
•    Enjoy for lunch or dinner

Introducing Go-To service for Mums - McGrath Estate Agents

I would like to introduce you to our second business within our Mums Go-to Directory.  It is my aim to create a go-to directory of recommended and endorsed businesses that help to make your life easier - no more searching for the right service - we will list it for you.

With 2013 approaching, I was speaking with Jason Featon, my Real Estate Agent in the Eastern Suburbs. We discussed what to avoid when buying and selling property in the Eastern Suburbs for 2013. Jason comments that ‘It is all about timing.’

’One of the first things your agent should consider is if the timing is right for you and secondly, is the timing right for your demographic to organise the best strategy for you and your property.

A simple consideration is school holidays. Is your target buyer demographic young families? If so, then you should work around the school holidays. If your  buyer demographic is  mainly young singles and  as a  family you can utilise this time by going away during the marketing period of the home to minimise the inconvenience of cleaning the and setting up, along with taking the family out a couple of times each week to show the home to perspective buyers.

Other consideration for 2013 is the Federal Election. Looking at previous years around the month of a federal election, the property market slows in the Eastern Suburbs. If possible, ensure the main part of the campaign for your property does not land in the middle of the election.

One other holiday period to think about is Public holidays. This can be a concern if your demographic is young professionals as they commonly organise their holidays around the public holidays to maximise their time off during the year.

These are some of the factors to consider for 2013 by utilising timing around you and your particular demographic of potential buyers. This is key to a successful result because if buying or selling, your success will be based on your competition and putting your property ahead of the rest.’

If you like to know more about this or any other property related questions feel free to contact Jason Featon on 0404 805 471 or jasonfeaton@mcgrath.com.au

Testimonial from a young family that sold their home through Jason

'We would highly recommend using Jason as a sales agent. From the outset Jason has proven himself to be a highly skilled and effective agent. In our first meeting it was evident that Jason had considerable knowledge of the area and of the market. His advice and direction has been 100% correct throughout this process.

During the sale Jason was professional and easy to deal with. He was always available to us and made sure that we were kept up to date with the progress of the campaign at all times. This professional nature is a credit to Jason as he was able to deal with all the potential buyers and was able to get the best possible outcome for us using his skills.

Jason more than impressed us with his knowledge, skill and enthusiasm. It wasn’t just during our sale that Jason helped us, he was available with invaluable advice as we were looking for our next property.

We would not hesitate to use Jason as a sales agent again and would strongly recommend to anyone thinking of selling to use Jason.'

Mum of the Moment - Meet Jasmin

Without our wonderful mums and bubs Body Beyond Baby just would not be.  Each month we like to celebrate your achievements and recognise the hard work that you put into your training and life as a mum.  This month we would like you to meet our Mum of the Moment for November - Jasmin.  You may recognise Jasmin as one of our joint winners of the 12 Week Winter Challenge.

Jas was nominated for Mum of the Moment by a number of other Body Beyond Baby mums who wanted to thank her for her support and motivation during the current 8 week challenge.  This comment from Jade says it all,  ’Jas, your food ideas, logs of your runs & home work outs, motivational posts & questions about what we're all up to have been great. I've followed your recipes, gone for runs because you've managed to squeeze them in & looked at how I could get more out of my challenge because of all your involvement. We don't know each other & we've only trained together a few times in the Saturday sessions, but its been nice to feel like we're all one big group doing this together - you get my vote.’

As a thank you to our Mum of the Moment and a congratulations for all of her hard work, Jas will receive a voucher for Plenty Kitchen and Tableware in Bondi Junction.

Meet Jasmin

Tell us a bit about yourself
Hi! My name is Jasmin and I am delighted to receive the Mum of the Moment award (actually I'm stunned!)  I am the Mum to Layla (2 1/2 yrs old) and wife to Daniel. We live in Queens Park having both grown up in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. When I am not training or looking after Layla, I work part time as the Industrial Relations Manager for GrainCorp here in Sydney.
What made you decide to join your second Body Beyond Baby challenge - Find Your Summer Body?
I decided to join this challenge after the amazing success I had on the Watch Your Winter Waistline Winter Challenge. I lost just under 12kg in 12 weeks and apart from the weight loss, I can truly say that I found myself. Having struggled with my weight my entire life despite diets and trainers, I felt like I had finally found something that worked in a supportive environment of mums and now great friends. Continuing onto my second challenge felt like a 'no brainer'! I was on a roll and wanted to see how far I could go. At the end of the winter challenge, I was not only below my goal weight but lower than I could ever remember weighing.
What has been your Body Beyond Baby highlight so far?
My highlight would be my 15kg weight loss and the doors (physically, emotionally and mentally) it has opened. I feel like a new person, with new drive and purpose.
What has been your greatest challenge?
I can honestly say that going grain free, sugar free and training 6 days a week has not been my challenge. My greatest challenge has been actually accepting the change. When I look in the mirror, I often see the same person. It is only when I put on my old (fat) clothes do I realise actually how far I have come. For some reason I always imagined that losing the weight would make me a different person. In reality it has made me a better person - a better Mum, wife, sister, friend and daughter.
Tell us about your Stampede experience?
I am the first to admit that I don't like getting dirty or hurt so when the opportunity to run The Stampede arose, my hands were firmly by my side. However, having seen how much fun the girls who did Tough Bloke Challenge had, and wondering whether I could complete such a course, I decided to dedicate myself to the experience and use it as a training goal. I trained each Sunday for the preceding 8 weeks in addition to my 4-5 training sessions each week. I added a 5km run to my program (until now I have never been able to run but it was, and continues to me a goal) as well as training to complete the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge run in the days before the Stampede.
On the day of the Stampede, I was pumped. I was so proud of the effort I had put in and that I had arrived at the start line in great physical condition. The race itself tested me physically and mentally. When I saw the end of the 5km challenge approaching, I dug deep and realised that I was actually enjoying the experience and coping with the physical demands. As a result I decided to join the group and push on to the 10km course. The second half really challenged me physically and mentally. Having the girls in orange around me kept me going. Having Amy’s support throughout the course kept me going and on track. When I saw the finish line and the final mud crawl I was so excited. To have my husband watch me and cheer me on made me feel so proud. To be able to stand at the end of the challenge muddy, scratched, bruised and still smiling is a true testament that anything is possible! I had many thoughts while I was running, about all the things in life I have considered to be too hard and how if I could do this then maybe those things were also obtainable. I have to admit, I am an over achiever and hate to fail. If I commit to something, I do it 150%. Training and the Stampede was no different.
What has been your family’s reaction to your new fitness regime?
They are delighted. They have watched and supported me over the years as I tried all different things. I had my first gym membership at 14 years of age and despite all of my efforts, I have been overweight for as long as I can remember. Overall, they are happy to see me happy and that I have been able to overcome the burden of weight in the process.
How do you feel when you receive such supportive comments from mums you hardly know?
Now I am blushing!  One of the reasons I really got into making this life change was because I too was inspired by a former work colleague in Brisbane who changed her diet and exercise with amazing results. She inspired me to ensure Layla ate well and that I set a positive example for her.
This comment reminds me of why I consider myself a member of the Body Beyond Baby community. I have run and exercised with countless groups, but Body Beyond Baby has brought a different dimension. I consider my training with the group to be about my physical and mental health too. I love seeing my new training friends and building new relationships in person and on facebook. Having such an amazing group of friends as a support network keeps me going. I can only hope that my journey continues to inspire others and in turn they also provide further inspiration to other Mums.
8) Do you have anything else to add?
Lately, people stop me to ask how I lost the weight. What I like to tell them is that I have been on a long journey. There have been ups and downs, success and failure. Despite the experience, I feel that I have finally found something that works. Everyone is different and their journey will be different. Overall, I came to realise that I had been in an abusive relationship with food for all of my life. Despite the love I showed these foods, all they did was treat me badly. So, I gained the courage to break up with my bad habits and started a new life. There is no looking back for me now. All I have to decide is what my next challenge will be.
A huge thanks to Jen for her friendship, support, guidance, motivation and energy. I have met many trainers but not many who are passionate about bigger issues and run such a professional business. The Body Beyond Baby model appeals to me on so many levels - professionally, morally, physically and emotionallyI am proud to be a member and hope to inspire others to join my journey. Without the BBB Mum Community, the benefits and support would not be the same. I look forward to celebrating at the end of year party with you all – my new friends and motivation xxx.

Body Beyond Baby does The Stampede

It's towards the end of the year that many of us including myself begin to reflect on the year that has been.  There may be things we look back on and wish they had gone differently - it is important to remember that everything that happens to us in life is there for a reason, to allow ourselves to experience everything we face whether it feels good or bad and to know it is part of our journey.

Many of us will look back on 2012 and feel good about the things we have done, the experiences we have had and what we have achieved.  For me, yesterday was an amazing example of something I am very proud to be a part of.  We took a team of 30 mums to take part in The Stampede - a 5 or 10k obstacle course. We had been training on a Sunday morning for the last 8 weeks and it all came together in an event that lasted around 2hours.  At the start of the race our team was split about 70/30 in favour of the 5km BUT as we approached the 5km mark the buzz about the team was that they wanted to charge on and finish the 10km.  Any evidence of being registered for the 5km was removed and they charged on ahead taking the 10km fork in the road ready to face another, totally unexpected 5km's of mud, obstacles and FUN!!!

The course was harder for some than others but the sense of being a team, working together to overcome every obstacle that was put in front of us was awesome - watching people choose to wait for others when they could have gone charging ahead and having a team of 30 all waiting at the finish line until every single person had completed so we could all cross together was very cool.  I am so proud of each and every one of you and would like to thank you for making what I do every single day such an amazing experience.

Body Beyond Baby is about creating communities of mums that come together to support each other through health and fitness.  I am extremely privileged to be surrounded by a group of wonderful mums who are all looking out for each other.  Yesterday was a display of what you are doing for each other on a daily basis - from supporting each other within your training, sharing healthy recipes, bouncing child related issues off each other and offering support through the friendships you have made and carrying this outside of your weekly training.  I get so excited when I hear of you organising the men in your life to look after your children (and the children of dads that aren't around for any reason)so that you can all take some mummy time out for exercise or any other reason.

I learn more about each of you every day and would like to thank you for being such inspiring, motivated and caring women and I LOVE having you as part of my world.

Now here's a few pics from yesterday

More pics to come......

Testimonial

‘Bell Landscapes have been looking after the maintenance of the terrace gardens at our harbour side apartment during the last 3 years, and we are exceedingly happy with their service.

Mark Bell has been terrific in all that we have asked of him, and has also designed a marvelous new garden on our remaining terrace, taking into consideration our very specific needs and preferences for lush but robust greenery, high privacy hedging, water features, subtle lighting, and framing of the harbour views.

While it is marvelous to put in beautiful landscaped gardens around homes or apartments, if they are not well maintained then all the planning, investment and hard work is wasted. Bell Landscapes has been first class in providing the maintenance.

We have a terrific relationship with The Garden Maintenance Team.  They have studied horticulture and have an extensive knowledge of design, plants, soil composition, micro climates – particularly around the harbour, and irrigation systems.  Dedicated professionals, they take great pride in keeping our garden healthy and lush, and all features and technology functioning perfectly.  They respond immediately if we encounter any problem whatsoever, nothing is too much trouble, and they keep us informed if the team is running even a few minutes late. They are always careful, meticulous and leave everything looking immaculate.  We appreciate this commitment and consideration. They are always on the lookout for particularly hard to find plants or herbs for us, and ready with suggestions for how to get the best out of our garden.

We are delighted to recommend Bell Landscapes for garden design and implementation, and for excellent garden maintenance.”

Mum of The Moment - Meet Mai

Without our wonderful mums and bubs Body Beyond Baby just would not be.  Each month we like to celebrate your achievements and recognise the hard work that you put into your training and life as a mum.  This month I would like you to meet our Mum of the Moment for October- Mai and her nine month old daughter; Kira.  Mai joined Body Beyond Baby on the recommendation of a Mum in her mother's group.

Mai was nominated for Mum of the Moment by a number of other Body Beyond Baby mums who know about the tough time her family has gone through with Kira's heart complications yet has still managed to create some time for herself and strategies in coping with a situation that is heart wrenching and that would challenge every single one of us.  Mai understands that by looking after herself she can be the best mother she can be and be there for Kira, to support her.  She is on her second challenge and is determined to keep her weekly sessions a priority in her life.

As a thank you to our Mum of the Moment and a congratulations for all of her hard work Mai will receive a voucher for Plenty Kitchen and Tableware in Bondi Junction

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm 34 (but definitely don't look it right?!) and originally from Wollongong but have been living in Sydney for about 9 years now. I've done some interesting jobs in my time including being a dance teacher and pouring beers in Canada but I'm pretty settled now working at UNSW, although being on maternity leave is the highlight of my job to date. I've been married to Rob for 6 years and we have a gorgeous girl Kira to round out our family. Kira is almost nine months old and a very cheeky but incredibly brave little lady.  She has some major heart complications which we first discovered when she was 6 days old. She has had three major surgeries since then but has come through them all with determination and a beautiful smile which we are incredibly thankful for.

What made you join Body Beyond Baby?

One of the mum's from my mother's group recommended Body Beyond Baby and I thought why not give it a go! I've always tried to stay fit and healthy but after having Kira I struggled getting back into any exercise routine. We don't have any family close by and my husband works shift-work so trying to work around his shifts and the needs of a newborn meant I was not really getting to the gym regularly.  While I did a lot of walking I didn't feel like I was getting anywhere in terms of regaining my fitness. The fact that there were nannies looking after Kira meant that I could lock in a day and time to commit to me and my fitness and this was probably the main reason I initially started with Body Beyond Baby. I hadn't done any prior group fitness training so wasn't exactly sure if it would be 'my thing' but I love it, and have from the very first session!

What has been your Body Beyond Baby highlight so far?

My highlight was the beep test score I achieved at the end of the last challenge.  My husband (who is a total fitness freak) was so proud of me.  He posted a comment on facebook to let everyone know what a fit wife he has and I received loads of nice comments from all of our friends saying they were really impressed that I had made such an effort after having Kira to get back to being fit and healthy - that made it all worthwhile for me.

What has been your greatest challenge?

My greatest challenge has been trying to keep my diet under control when we've been going through our rough times with Kira. I can't have caffeine because of Kira's condition while I'm breastfeeding, and Kira used to wake every 2 hours at night so I'll admit that I've fallen off the wagon quite a few times in relation to sugar (sometimes I just couldn't resist that little pep). I'm getting it under control now in this challenge and have given up my vice of hot chocolates in favour of hot water with lemon or herbal teas. Being in hospital and having constant appointments with Doctors also threw out my level of preparation for meals which, coupled with my average cooking skills has meant that I am not where I'd like to be in terms of a really healthy diet. It's never been really bad but just not exactly what it should.....slowly but surely.

What has inspired you to sign up to our Find Your Summer Body 8 Week Challenge?

I really enjoyed the Watch Your Winter Waistline challenge. It kept me focused on putting aside that extra time each week for 'me', at a time when I really had little energy to concentrate on myself. I know I feel much better both physically and mentally because of it. While I was really happy with what I achieved in the Winter challenge, I knew I had a bit more in me and could do with a little bit less in my thighs so I signed up for the challenge inspired by the thought of revealing a new swimsuit on my tropical holiday in December!

Do you have anything else to add?

Training with Body Beyond Baby is the most fun I have ever had while exercising. I look forward to every session knowing that I will always have that extra little bit of energy for whatever my cheeky and demanding little bub throws at me that day. Jen is truly passionate about what she does and it shows in the way she is able to get the best out of everyone in the sessions and particularly the challenges. I am constantly inspired being surrounded by amazing mums who have taken time out of their busy days to commit to themselves and their fitness- how can you not be!
